The History of Schlitz Beer

The information you'll find at http://www.chiptin.com/schlitz/index.htm was first put together nearly ten years ago and has never been in print before. That's not entirely true - many of the entries were first printed in newspapers, books, and pamphlets up to over 150 years ago.

In addition to finding information about the Schlitz Company, there are a lot of interesting items about other Milwaukee breweries, the City of Milwaukee, and the Ühlein/Uihlein/Uehlein family. Information about the Schlitz and Krug families is also being developed. Please note that these articles will be revised from time to time, with additions and corrections - I will change the "Revision Date" as this is done.

Hundreds of hours were spent browsing the main Milwaukee Public Library's Sentinel card files, and then examining the dozens and dozens of microfilm spools. Each of the hundreds of copied sheets were then carefully read, edited, and typed into this chronology of Schlitz company events. Visits to the Milwaukee County Historical Society yielded books, pamphlets, news clippings and City Directories to pour over and copy information from. Of course no research would be complete without visits to the Milwaukee County Court House to get copies of old wills, death notices, and birth certificates.

Sincerely,

Schlitzpro

I quit drinking about 30 years ago and since then I have had a schlitz beer in my refrigerator. Pop top and unopened, and it was the last beer that I had left out of a 12 pk and I didn't see any reason to throw it away. Loved Schlitz beer.

I'd heard that Schlitz is re-introducing their "Classic 60s Formula" in Minneapolis and Tampa. I'm in Mpls area, so my wife checked at the local liquor store and, lo and behold, they have it. The owner said the company must be serious, as they came in and cleaned them out of all their Schlitz stock and replaced it with the new (old formula). Just cracked one out of an icy six-pack and I think I'm in love. My dad drank Schlitz, when I was a kid and stopped when he said the recipe had changed and the stuff just tasted like "old Stroh's". My first taste of the nectar of the gods was that old Schlitz. It's back, baby!

I'm sure it won't be hard to find in the Twin Cities. I discovered it by accident at a liquor store in Sibley Plaza Mall, W 7th St. in St. Paul.

My suggestion is to call a few stores near you.

It does have more flavor than the usual generic American beers made these days.

I saw a picture of a Schlitz Beer ad on a wall of a an old Spanish era building on a YouTube video called "Spanish Philippines: Colonial Era". This was supposed to be during the Spanish era, between 1500 and 1800. You'll find the picture towards 3/4 of the video, on the lower photo of a double shot frame. Is the brand name really that old?

Sounds like a great company. It's too bad some of this families profits are in the hands of undeseverving family members such as Robert A. Uihlein IV. He is a heroin user. His girlfriend was my cousin Courtney. He introduced her to heroin, and was there with her when she overdosed and died, just last week. Robert the 4ths father has not offered any condolences to my family, and is doing nothing but hiring lawyers to "protect" his son. If he really wanted to protect his son maybe he should use some of his wealth to get him some rehabilitation before there is another tragedy.

I am very sorry for your loss Rachel. Everyone that knew Courtney loved her very much. I understand your anger towards Augie and his father but I knew Augie as a very kind and loving boy who got very lost in these last couple years. His family did send him to rehab just after Courtney died. May he and Courtney both rest in peace. God loved them both and their deaths were part of his plan. We will see them once again.

Why would any of you speak so public about such a personal issue, you rachel and your family have attacked the uihleins publicly enough, how would you feel if this was done to courtney after she lost augie? You don't ven know augie or his family, you know a fraction of there life. Great thanks to you and your family for making this very very unfourtuate event worse for both sides.
